Home' Accord : Accord December 2014 Contents Hello membership, I wanted
to make you aware of a
recent Sunday Extra radio
program, which aired on the
30th November. In essence
the program subject was on
commissions paid for hearing
aid sales and the relationships
bet ween manufacturers and
retailers. The program highlighted the fact that over
recent years there has been a growing number of
integrated companies and the apparent pressures
these companies put on clinicians to sell hearing aids
and in par ticular high end hearing aids. From my
point of view it was disappointing to hear some of the
stories relating to pressure selling. This scrutiny wasn’t
isolated to those working within ver tically integrated
company but appeared more obvious because of the
ties between manufacturer and retailer.
I am not in any way suppor ting the view of the program
and in fact I believe ACAud has never received a
complaint of this nature but I am concerned about
the scrutiny and I feel this warrants some discussion.
The executive is due to meet early nex t year and have
listed a review of our code of ethics as an agenda item.
My interest at the moment is to make you all aware of
the broadcast as some of the inter viewees of whom
come from a medical background felt it was unethical to
receive commissions and believed the prac tice should
stop or at least be disclosed to the client.
For those that may be interested in listening to the
program I believe a podcast is available on the ABC
Speaking of web sites, we are in the process of
overhauling ours and par t of the process will be to
make it a member’s only site. The refreshed look is
in keeping with the times and once up and running
you will be required to register on line to gain access.
This will give you the ability to edit personal details
register for events and source information. This will
be an ongoing exercise and we are hoping to manage
our billing struc ture through the site as well. You will
receive more information shor tly.
Over recent months we have had some members
voice their concerns suggesting we might see a huge
number of relocations with the initiation of the por tal.
At a recent PPB meeting the Office advises the number
of relocations is consistent, at around 5%, for both pre
and post-por tal periods.
The refit criteria was also discussed and I would advise
members as a mat ter of course and for audit sake
when considering a refit outside the 5 year criteria to
insure notes reflect the reasoning about the decisions
made. Keep in mind when audited the office will want
to follow a story suppor ting the refit.
In 2013 we advised the membership of changes to the
CEP program basically changing from 30 CEP points
per year to 50 points over a 2-year period. To give
members alternative options for continuing education
we would like to inform the membership we will provide
a minimum of one CEP program in a non-conference
year. This along with up to the 30 points earned from
the AC Aud conference should cover a major por tion
of the points required in the CEP period.
I might take a moment to advise members as at the
30th June 2015 you should have records indicating
you have met your CEP requirements for the 2013/15
period. As of July 1, 2015 the ACAud office will start
its random audit process and failure to meet member
obligations could lead to loss of membership and all
that this entails.
Finally as this will be our pre Christmas edition I would
like to wish you all a safe and Merr y Christmas
