To whom it may concern,
We recently wrote to you seeking the opportunity to discuss your decision not to provide rebates for
hearing aids when fitted by Audiometrists. You may or may not be aware Audiometrist until fairly recent
times were the fundamental provider of privately fitted hearing devices in Australia. In 1992 the Federal
Government introduced the Office of Hearing Services initiative in an endeavour to boost the number of
qualified providers providing hearing services for pensioners and DVA clients. This was a government
initiative to overcome the continuing pressures of an ageing population demands on hearing services
previously only provided by the government provider, Australian Hearing.
ACAud, a professional body representing Audiometrists and Audiologists with over 500 members, is the
major representative of Audiometrists in Australia. ACAud is constantly improving education standards
with the current requirements for full membership, the Diploma of Hearing Aid Evaluation and Prescription.
ACAud was also instrumental in the creation of the Bachelor of Audiometry, which members have
already undertaken and some have completed. ACAud members are required to undertake stringent
CEP (Continuing Education Program) requirements to maintain their membership status.
As discussed in previous correspondence to you, Audiometrists have been involved in hearing service
delivery in Australia since its inception,
Audiometrists are recognized as equals to Audiologists under the Office of Hearing Services provisions,
which are main stream in the Australian Hearing Health Care landscape. Under this system Audiometrists
and Audiologists are reimbursed equally through Medicare under their OHS Qualified Practitioner number.
In many rural and remote areas Audiometrists are the only service providers and current policy
disadvantages these clients.
In the private sector the percentage of Audiometrist to Audiologists is much greater as most Audiologists
work for either Australian Hearing or the Hospital system.
We also understand other para-medical providers such as spectacle makers and dental technicians are
not excluded from rebate services by BUPA. Both these professions are trade based with TAFE
We again would appreciate the opportunity to meet with you to discuss this matter further.
